I'm trying to figure out how to use watercolors. This is attempt #2.

Caitlin, this is so beautiful. Also, you drew Bard. Poor guy never got to be a hero even though he did slay the dragon.

he did get to be king or something, though, didn't he?
and thanks!

True, but who wants to be King? It's more fun to be handsomely rewarded and let other people do the governing. Though Bard didn't seem much into fun.

true! I love it that in The Hobbit, the dragonslayer is not the protagonist, and is not even a young, handsome heroic type; he's a pessimistic, slightly paranoid middle-aged grouch who just knew what needed to be done and did it. :D

Of course, most real life heroes are like that. Kudos to Tolkein.

incorrect. YOU are the best thing.

Incorrect. There cannot be three best things (you, me, and this).
I took a poll and the rest of the world agrees that while I am sometimes funny, and Smaug is always shiny, we all think that you are in actuality the best thing.

Kinda a loopy style, fitting with Tolkien's drawings, I think. The color is well blended, and though Bard's stance looks a little static, everything else looks good.

jeremy keeps telling me the loopy smoke looks incongruous. maybe it does.

Jeremy is the most wrong ever mostly because the smoke is very stylized, so it fits with the feel of the rest of the piece, and also because I don't know how else you would depict smoke in this style.

Me gusta.

The flames do look a little... fat, I guess. Though I'm impressed at how well you managed to keep the color in the lines. Though really, with smoke, you almost WANT it to diffuse more.
